Hi friends! You’ll all be relieved to know that I’m alive and haven’t been Raptured! I came back to do a review of the Left Behind movie and realized I had a nearly-complete write up of The Leftovers (the novel) still in my drafts from August. So I finished it up! A bit more serious than my usual tone, but I felt that Perrotta’s achievement deserved a little more respect than the usual if-we-throw-Jesus-in-it-no-one-will-notice-how-terrible-it-is excuse for a Rapture story.
The best thing about Tom Perrotta’s The Leftovers is that, compared to other Rapture books, absolutely nothing happens.
That may sound like an insult, but it’s not.
Since I first mentioned Tom Perrotta’s The Leftovers half a year ago, it’s become one of my absolute favorite books! Believe it or not, this is a genuinely literary Rapture novel where the writing is beautiful and the characters are human. Now it has its own TV series, premiering on Sunday, June 29th! Check out the trailers below!
HBO is working on the pilot for a new Rapture-themed show called Leftovers. The show will follow select characters who are trying to cope with a new reality “after a rapture-like event zaps a substantial portion of the human population into oblivion.” Hopefully we will be hearing more about this show soon! For now, you can read about the project here.
The original book by Tom Perrotta is available on amazon.com. I can’t wait to read it!
